The 2023 Runner-up for the LT Valerie Cappelaere Delaney Memorial Scholarship, who won $1,000.00, is Emily Newcombe of Hamilton, Montana. Emily studied Forestry at Virginia Tech and started working as a wildland firefighter while in college. This year will be her sixth season in firefighting. In the offseason, she works on a horse ranch and enjoys outdoor activities such as skiing, snowboarding, trail running, and hiking. She is currently a student pilot with a goal of eventually transitioning to a career in the aviation side of firefighting. Best wishes to Emily!
